The lads and young men in the village got caught up in the net when football became popular in the 1880s, and formed a club. Before long they were playing leading Lancashire cclubs including Accrington, Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers, Blackburn Olympic, Burnley, Bury, Bolton, Everton and Liverpool.
